Sectors and diversification
Why spreading picks across different businesses matters.

Step 1 of 5
The 11 sectors
Companies are grouped into 11 sectors by what they do: technology, health care, financials, consumer discretionary (things people want), consumer staples (things people need), energy, industrials, materials, utilities, real estate, and communication services.
Stocks in the same sector often move together, because the same news affects them. An oil price jump can lift most energy stocks at once.
