Stock screener tutorial

A screener narrows a long list of stocks to the ones that match measures you choose. Pick a sector and see how each filter shrinks the list.

  1. Step 1: Start with a sector: Technology

Checks: Every stock we carry in the sector.

Companies in the same sector face similar conditions, so their numbers are easier to compare.

  2. Step 2: Keep profitable companies

Checks: Positive earnings over the last twelve months.

Some people start with companies that already earn money; others look for growth before profits.

  3. Step 3: Compare P/E with the sector

Checks: A price-to-earnings ratio at or below the sector's median.

P/E shows what investors pay per dollar of earnings. Comparing within a sector keeps the comparison fair.

    Technology median P/E: 23.3
